Example: undertook a study for the US National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) to analyse the learning systems of five jurisdictions that perform unusually well in international surveys of student achievement Curriculum Review and Reform Reviewing jurisdictions’ school curricula and providing recommendations for their redesign. Examples: undertook a review of the school curriculum for the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) and provided recommendations for its reform provided advice to the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates for a major reform of that nation’s curriculum School Improvement Assisting schools and school systems to review and evaluate current practices against highly effective practices identified through international research and experience. Example: developed the School Improvement Tool endorsed by governments for use in all Australian schools and worked with school systems in its implementation School Leadership Working with school systems to clarify what highly effective principals do to improve the quality of teaching and learning, and thus student outcomes. Example: developed the Principal Performance Improvement Tool for the Western Australian Department of Education to assist principals to reflect on their own practices National Assessment Programs Assisting governments to introduce or reform national assessments of student achievement, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Example: provided advice to school systems in Scotland, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia on the introduction of national assessments to monitor student attainment and progress International Assessment Programs Supporting jurisdictions to participate in international assessments such as PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS, and to interpret and make best use of data from these assessments. Examples: provided technical advice and oversaw the international delivery of major global achievement surveys, including PISA supported countries, including Indonesia, to align their national assessment programs with PISA Assessment Redesign Assisting school systems to redesign assessments to establish where students are in their learning, inform decision making, and monitor learning progress over time. Example: oversaw the evolution of Australia’s Progressive Achievement (PAT) assessments, which are now used in more than two-thirds of schools, together with aligned teaching resources and professional learning for teachers.
